Obituary

Walter Scott Jackson, Jr. was born July 4, 1927 in Pomeroy, WA. to Walter Scott, Sr. and Gertrude Ethel Jackson. He was raised on the family farm and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 serving his country until 1948. In 1949 he married Joann Van Wechel. Five children were born to them, Diane Lynn (Jim), Larry Wayne (Irene), Randy Dale, Gregory Scott (Rae) and Kenneth Kirk (Kim). In 1962 he married Jeanne Theresa Dube. They made their home in Wapato, WA. He was a career truck driver. In 1969 the couple moved to Friday Harbor, WA, San Juan Island, where he managed a cow-calf operation for the noted author Ernest K Gann. In 1972 they returned to the mainland settling in Mount Vernon, WA. In 1977 he started his own owner-operator trucking business S.J. Trucking and due to health reasons he retired in 1988. In 1981 he joined the Catholic Church and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Mount Vernon. He volunteered with his wife for 6 years with the Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank and later as a volunteer for 6 years in the RSVP for the Mount Vernon Police Dept. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half sister, Winona Quigley, half sisters Dorothy and Margaret, a sister Laura Smith and a brother Grant. He is survived by his wife, five children, eight grandchildren, Ronald, Janine, Yvonne, Shannon, Sarah, Casey, Amber and Kirk, six great-grandchildren, sisters Grace (Earl) Johns, brothers Dick (Terri) and Ronald (Nelly), and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express our gratitude to Birchview Memory Care Community in Sedro Woolley for their kind and compassionate care of Mr. Jackson. We could not have gotten through this without them. Viewing will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2010 10:00am until the Rosary at 7:00pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home 1825 E College Way in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, April 29, 2010 12:15pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 100 S. 5th St. in Mount Vernon. Committal Service will be held Friday April 30, 2010 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Yakima, WA. In lieu of flowers please make donations in his name to the Immaculate Conception Building Fund or charity of your choice.
