Captain William M. Grobschmit, 89 of Mount Vernon, WA went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 17:30. Bill was born on March 11, 1921 in Seattle, Washington to Matthew and Jennie Grobschmit. He was a World War II and Korean War Veteran serving in the Merchant Marines commandeered by the Navy during WWII as a Lieutenant Jr. Grade, serving in the Pacific War Zone, Japan, Philippines, Korea and the Atlantic War Zone. After his military service, traveling overseas on American Mail Line Ships. He worked with the Washington State Ferries as a Captain servicing the Anacortes run from 1953 to 1969. He was with the Puget Sound Pilots from 1969 until his retirement in 1987. He married his first love, Marie H. Jorgensen, his high school sweetheart, on November 30, 1951. His other love was the sea. His life and career revolved around it. He enjoyed time with his family as well as, woodworking, gardening, traveling, fishing in Mexico and Alaska and bread making (Julekake) for friends and family. He was a faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marie Grobschmit; children: David (Tammie) Grobschmit of Mount Vernon, Jeff (Linda) Hendricks of Anacortes and Jennie (Randy) Krumm of Stanwood; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and his brother Jim of Mount Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents. Viewing will be held Thursday, October 14, 2010 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Friday, October 15, 2010, 9:00 am until 3:00 pm at Hawthorne Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will follow on Friday, 4:00 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church. A private burial will be in the Hawthorne Veteran Garden.
