Selby Irwin, was born on February 24, 1942, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and passed away on April 17, 2024, at the age of 82 in Mount Vernon Washington. Selby, known for his giving nature, strength, and perseverance in life, spent years inspiring others on how to overcome life's adversities and always finding the adventures in life. He never spoke a bad word of anyone, instead looking for the best in all people and expecting nothing but the best in himself. He was extremely loyal to his friends and family especially to his beloved wife Jean. Selby had a passion for storytelling , listening to a good joke and sharing his advice in life with others.
Selby is survived by his wife Jean of 53 wonderful years. She was truly the love of his life and their marriage was an example to what others strived to be. Selby was also survived by his "favorite " sister Sharon Vanderhyde, brother-in-law Jerry (Carol) Durr and sister-in-law Jane Irwin. He was preceded in death by his parents Margery and Arnold Irwin, brother George Irwin, brother-in-law Ken Vanderhyde, father and mother-in-law Harold and Babe Durr and brother-in-law Jack Durr, Selby was also survived by several nieces and nephews whom he cherished dearly and treated as if they were his own children.
Selby attended Mount Vernon High School and went on to have a successful combined career spanning 33 years at Gubrud Motor Co and Gordon Valley Nissan. He was a dedicated member and former president of the Skagit Old Car Club. Selby's love for cars began in his childhood, where he crafted steering wheels out of his mother's stove lids. He enjoyed antique cars, attending car shows with his many friends, and working on pedal cars throughout his life right up until his passing.
A service to honor Selby's life will be held at Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon, WA on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 11:00am with a reception to follow.
Selby will be remembered for his resilience, kindness, and passion for life. He leaves behind a circle of friends and family that he truly impacted in everyway and made them better people just for having known him.
