Obituary

Winifred Burkhart Spurgeon April 29, 1908 – February 20, 2007 Winifred was born in Lone Tree, Des Lacs Township, North Dakota the 3rd of 4 children to John Henry and Euphemia Florence Burkhart. After graduation from Lone Tree High School she worked for several years as a secretary in the North Dakota State capital in Bismarck, ND. Her parents moved to Washington in the 1930s and she eventually followed and settled in Sedro Woolley. She worked during this time at Northern State Hospital. She married Orville Newton Spurgeon on September 24, 1942 while he was stationed in New Orleans with the United States Army and she was a civil service employee in support of the war effort. After WW II she moved with her husband to Washington living in Anacortes, and Sedro Woolley before settling in a house they built in Mount Vernon in 1950. Following the birth of her children she became a full-time homemaker. She had two children. James was born in 1946, attended Mount Vernon public schools graduating from high school in 1964. He graduated from Bethel College in St. Paul Minnesota in 1968, and Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia in 1972. He has pastored churches in New York, New Jersey, Kansas and Virginia. James and his wife Linda gave Mrs. Spurgeon 3 grandchildren, Lisa, Jeffrey and Christopher and one great grandchild Thomas, to Jeffrey and his wife Christy. Sandra was born in 1947, and likewise attended Mount Vernon schools graduating from high school in 1965. She likewise attended Bethel College graduating in 1969; she then obtained a Ph.D. degree in botany from Washington State University, and did post doctoral study at the Smithsonian outside of Washington D.C. and at the University Wisconsin. This study prepared her for a career in the developing bio-tech industry. She worked in Wisconsin and more lately in Northern California. Mr. Spurgeon died in 1972. Subsequently Mrs. Spurgeon moved to Wisconsin to be near her daughter and then to California where she lived in San Mateo with Sandra. She was active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mount Vernon during the time the children were being raised, also serving the church's outreach in Wickersham where Mr. Spurgeon preached and led services and classes. They attended Berean Baptist Church in the later years. She is survived by her children, 3 nieces Ardith (Rehfeld) of Port Orchard WA, Myrna (Hayes) of Garland TX and Pat (Bolyard) Minot ND; 4 Nephews Ken Burkhart of Portland OR and Terry, Doug and Dwight Burkhart of ND and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers Norman, Elton and Loren.
