Obituary

Yeojin Chung was born on June 10, 1986, in Seoul, South Korea. From a young age, she showed immense intelligence, intentionality, and maturity. Upon entering junior high, she decided to leave the formal education system to pursue her studies autonomously. Her parents empowered her to follow through on this decision because she eloquently argued that school got in the way of her well-thought-out blueprint of learning and life. She invested her teenage years to accelerate her learning and became a published writer and reviewer of theater productions. During that time, she volunteered for the Anti-Miss Korea Pageant because she saw it as an opportunity to practice her belief that women should not be objectified, commercialized, or judged only by their looks. In addition, she was funded by UNICEF Korea to travel to Japan and Thailand to build connections between youths to promote cross-cultural friendship beyond borders. She also helped care for her younger sister who is nine years younger. When she would pick up her sister from daycare, Yeojin patiently slowed down to match the pace of her sister's little steps. She always endeavored to pioneer her own path, break down barriers, and sow seeds of healing and peace.

In 2001, Yeojin visited the Pacific Northwest with her family before moving with her family to Hawaii at age 17. There, she attended Leeward Community College, where she sparked the attention of her physics teacher, who encouraged her to pursue a career in physics. Yeojin's response, however, was that she studied physics only for fun. To pursue her passion for the humanities and return to the region she fell in love with on her 2001 visit, she attended the University of Washington. She graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor's in Drama. Her degree led her to the Washington National Opera where she worked under the leadership of world-renowned artist Placido Domingo. She also worked at the Denver Children's Theater and Seatle Children's Theater.

She strived to make the arts more accessible to the general public, especially people of lower socioeconomic backgrounds. She went back to school in pursuit of her first Master's in New York University's Tisch School of Arts for an in-depth understanding of arts through diverse perspectives such as socio-economics, politics, and multi-cultural harmony and cacophony. One of her projects was, "Don't Ni Hao Me." Given her Asian appearance, random strangers in New York City sometimes "Ni-Haoed" her (assumed she was Chinese and greeted her with the Mandarin word for hello). They were often abrupt, blunt, and even rude in their approach. She interpreted it as one of many examples of microaggressions based on racism. These experiences led her to a project. She made name tags with her name in 30 different languages. She did a presentation wearing all those name tags. "No matter where I am, whatever language my name is in, I am Yeojin Chung. I should be respected for who I am, and not be stereotyped or disparaged for how I look," was her message.

Eventually, she once again came back the west coast. She took a temporary detour into the IT field and worked for Microsoft before going back to pursue another degree. Yeojin graduated from Seattle University with her second Master's in School Psychology in 2019 and subsequently practiced psychology as a social change agent.

During her time at Seattle University, Yeojin met her husband CJ. In 2020 the two moved to Mount Vernon, Washington to start a new chapter of life as partners and got married the same year. Yeojin gave birth to her daughters Juniper, in 2021, and Maple, in 2023. She was a dedicated mother, loving wife, caring daughter and sister, compassionate friend, and empathetic School Psychologist. She was devoted to social justice and helping others. She maintained a healthy life doing kickboxing and yoga and exploring the outdoors with her loved ones. She was unapologetically her quirky self, valuing humor and wit to add the fun in life. She lived life to the fullest, always aspiring to be the best person she could be. She will be missed dearly.
